Picture of the Day - The Return of the Monkey God
A little while back, I noted that Barack Obama carries, among other things, a small monkey god for luck. He brought it out again on the campaign plane the other day. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)
Well, I just thought this next bit was an interesting tie in.

I feel kind of sad about the response to this story I've seen on other blogs - ignorant snarky cheap shots on other people's religion, mostly. The Hindus that I know are also dismayed at the reaction.
The "creation" of an idol is not something done on a whim or to kill time on a slow day. It's a long process involving a dozen priests, and it's also expensive. You don't just drop it into a crate and ship it Barack; it must be accompanied by a priest who performs the required rituals seven times a day, for the entire journey. These Indians are so enthusiastic about Obama that they are sending a god to help him win - that's how they see it. And instead people here snicker and roll their eyes as if they are sending a velvet painting of Elvis or something.
It's illegal for him to keep it, of course, but I'm really hoping he can be gracious and respectful about the matter. He should really donate it to the local Hindu temple here in Minneapolis. Their newly-built temple was completely vandalised by some hateful dimwits about a year ago, with all of the idols and statues destroyed. It was a big story in India, and he could turn this whole thing into a statement of tolerance, diversity, and respect that would resonate both here and in India. It doesn't always have to be about the votes. Sometimes it's just about doing the right thing.
