Political bits/observations

It's funny. To most of the country, McCain is Bush III, but to the evangelicals, the one group where that Bush III mantle would be a benefit, McCain is seen as not Bush enough. (LATimes) McCain finds a distinct lack of passion in Ohio.

After three months of general election campaigning and the latest round of buildout, John McCain's nationwide campaign staff will be about 250. Barack Obama's nationwide campaign staff is already about 800. (In a year with so many states on the map.)

(BillKristol/NYTimes) "..... almost every Republican I’ve talked to is alarmed that the McCain campaign doesn’t seem up to the task of electing John McCain."

Have you noticed that part of the framing of the Obama candidacy is "he has a lot of work to do among" women, Latinos, working class whites, Jews, Seniors, etc? (Is this just a more polite way to ask "can a black candidate win?")

A WaPo piece talking about George Bush increasingly retreating into historical analogy to try and justify his current unpopularity. ("The only connection between Harry Truman and George Bush is that they left office with low opinion numbers," said historian Douglas Brinkley of Rice University. "That's a very thin reed.")

And, for your ridiculous headline, (AFP) Bush to take bow on European stage. (Oh yes. I can hear them applauding from here.)

Yes, I've noticed this. But I think it's a straw-man argument. This meme has been out there since February and yet Obama is now the presumptive nominee. Obama doesn't have a LOT of work to do in these communities. It's the Appalachian racist group that he has a problem with.

I'm sure we'll hear endless "concern" from the out of touch punditocracy from now until the end of Obama's second term. :) I wish I could make the dough the cable-heads make for just makin' shit up and pullin' "facts" outa my butt! I mean, that's what I do here... for free.

  • I agree. I've been watching some of the segment polling, and he's at least on par with the last two pres candidates among Latinos, Jews, and working whites.

There might be some regional issues, appalachian whites or Florida Jews for instance, but on the topline numbers, he's probably a little ahead of where he should be at this point with his weaker groups.

So, that's why I was asking the question. The direct race question appears to now be off limits, so now they're splicing it into subgroups, but it's still the same question, you know?

For now, I think you're right. The reputable (non-cable, talk radio) have dropped the Black v Whiteworkingclass (I guess there's no working, or working class Blacks). It'll be back by Labor Day...

The media were all color blind until the primary became Hillary v Barack, and I think this was in no small part due to the Clinton campaign making it an issue. You can count on the Republicans to make it an issue.
