The scary thing about gas prices......

I'm a little freaked out that we've gotten to $4/gallon without any of the major events that we thought might bring us here.

No Iranians shooting ships in the Gulf, no Saudi coup, no giant embargo, no terrorism on the oilfields, no major Russian move..... and we're still at $4/gallon.

  • Americans are like the proverbial frog in a pot of ever-warming water....

On so many practical, ethical issues we've simply lost the capacity to be outraged. What happened to us? This is stuff that causes mass demonstrations in other countries. But here?

I hope we haven't reached a point of no return as a society... as a nation. I've said it before, but maybe we're like that drunk who has to hit absolute rock bottom before they'll start to pull themselves back together. Will it take another Great Depression? Or will will only see the light after everything goes dark?

  • Our outrage meters have been blown. Just too many uses over the last 7 years.

You know, my contention is that the larger forces have pushed us past a point. I still don't see a catastrophic fall, but the US is once again becoming a nation among nations.

  • ...but the invasion of Iraq was supposed to make gas really cheap, remember?
"We" were gonna get the oil, and gas prices would fall below 2003 levels ($2/gal), right?

Of course, the same thing was said about the First Gulf War. The same thing is being said about an invasion of Iran.
We are suckers with a short memory.
