The first real attack on McCain.

The Obama campaign crafts its first real, direct attack ad on McCain. This is a taste of what the future of the campaign probably looks like.

(It does mark a new tone. Two Obama quotes over the last two days, "In the coming days it’s going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain," and, regarding the GOP in general, "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant.")

Also, add this one from today, "Senator McCain’s energy plan reads like an early Christmas list for oil and gas lobbyists. And it’s no wonder – because many of his top advisors are former oil and gas lobbyists."

Definitely a new tone.

  • Definitely a different tone. The "Original Maverick?" ad was the first Obama ad that just talks about McCain without highlighting Obama's positives (on policy or biography).

This is a generic negative ad. Obama's other ads all had a positive bump at the end. It may be necessary, but he does lose a key campaign differentiator by doing this.

On a different note, I caught a sound bite from Stephanie Miller while watching a web clip of Dan Abrams show.

"The difference between Obama and McCain is that Obama holds and event and draws a crowd; McCain finds a crowd and inserts himself into the event"

I'm paraphrasing, but I thought it was a pithy and accurate observation.

  • I noticed the negative/positive construction and always thought it made them less effective as either.

And that is a pretty good observation.

It also points out again, who are McCain's passionate group?Who turns out with enthusiasm for John McCain?
