Picture of the Day - 3

How interesting is this photo? You figure the Georgians probably checked with the US before going into Ossetia, and you figure the Russians probably had that intel and were prepped to go in response.

And here are the two guys, sitting next to each other, being social, while it's all going on.......

  • Hard to believe Bush didn't know Sakhashvili was going to do something.

  • Yeah. And it's not too likely that the Russians didn't have intel on it as well.

That's why this picture is so fascinating.

(I may change the post to reflect that more accurately.)

  • Can you pull the camera back a little bit? I bet he is reading "My Pet Goat".

  • I'm not so sure that the U.S. knew that Georgia was going to make a move. In fact, it isn't clear who moved first.

But the Russians have been amassing troops on the border for months, so their reaction (or action as the case may be) comes as no surprise to the U.S. or anyone else paying attention.

  • If Bush wasn't tipped off then the NATO 'advisors' weren't doing their job.

  • PragueTwin, I'm prone to thinking that at least something was telegraphed since they are relying on the US for at least political cover.

Especially since Georgia is coveting NATO membership.

Plus Saakashvili (Sorry if the spelling's off) has ties into Washington. After all, a conglomeration of US groups like the IRI were involved in his rise to power.
