Afghanistan

I've been talking all politics for the last two weeks, but I do feel the need to mention events along Pakistan/Afghanistan border.

The US conducted an attack inside Pakistan, flying in on helicopters, landing, conducting a ground operation, and then flying back out. (Seizing someone?)

Another US drone attack inside Pakistan killed 5.

This captures the downspiralling government of Karzai.

And, now a report that the Pentagon is advising a delay in the Iraq drawdown which will also delay new troops into Afghanistan.

  • I suppose the thinking is that if enough pressure is applied the Pakistanis will 'clean up' the tribal areas.

  • Partially.

I would also bet part is they don't want the Taleban striking at will with the ability to affect the election here.

Even if it's not for the Republican side here, within the tactical PR context there, if they were to show freedom of attack within the next 60 days it would have ramifications within that war.

  • I get your point but I'm not sure the Taliban care who gets elected.

  • No, I don't think they significantly do, but if they were able to substantially attack the US forces during that time it would be a strong PR move for them in Afghanistan/Pakistan.
