Hmmmm.....

Buried in a USAToday piece saying Palin was before the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it,
Wasilla, which in 2007 had 9,780 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, hired a lobbyist in 2000, public records show, paying him about $36,000 per year.

Or this from the NYTimes,
As the new mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska, in 2000, Ms. Palin initiated a tradition of making annual trips to Washington to ask for more earmarks from the state’s Congressional delegation, mainly Representative Don Young and Senator Ted Stevens, both Republicans.

Seems unusually active in seeking earmarks for the mayor of a tiny town under 10,000, no?

  • I'm not the objective observer of news that Mike is, but I'm getting the feeling the media, as the look into Palin's real track record as a politician are finding that that record doesn't jibe with her and McCain's rhetoric. The voices coming from Alaska, Dem and Repub, are suggesting (strongly?) that Palin is a a bit of a phony. At least with regard to her opposition to earmarks, federal aid to her state, the "bridge to nowhere", and more.

I'll say again, I think her willingness to call out "corrupt" politicians is base on her own political desires to destroy/remove political blocks to her own agenda and advancement. It is a political tool, not a moral conviction.

(As with all Palin comments at this early stage, we'll have to see how the media cover her -- and the opposition counter her -- in the weeks following the GOP convention)

  • I'm seeing that, but I'm also seeing something of a caution in the media coverage, like nobody wants to be the first one and risk the evangelical blowback or maybe charges of sexism.

There does seem to be a tepid nature to the coverage.

One of a few things is going to happen. Someone is going to report some news story fact that opens the floodgates. Someone significant writes an "Emporer has no clothes" piece that opens it up, or they just stay tepid and she continues this uncomfortable but kind coverage.
