Jerry freakin' Springer.

I don't offer this because it's true. (I have no idea.) I offer it because it's a sign of just how badly the GOP is losing the effort to define Sarah Palin.

When your vice presidential candidate is appearing on multiple tabloid covers over multiple separate issues, you've lost image control.

  • I was thinking... If this is what the coverage is during the love-fest of the GOP convention, what's it going to be like next week when they don't essentially have the media hostage in St. Paul? And they start covering the Obama campain again.

  • Guess who said it

"She does herself a disservice to even mention it, really," (blank) said. "When I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism, or maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think, 'Man, that doesn't do us any good, women in politics, or women in general, trying to progress this country,'" (blank) said. "I don't think it bodes well for her."

  • EPM, we're going to have to wait and see if the media gets a crush on Palin after tonight.

But, those articles will still be on the newssatnd come tomorrow and into next week.

She needs an amazing speech that makes it not OK to pick ion her. I don't know how you write that speech.

    ....

Zen, Yeah. Another bit on the fallacy that she's reaching Clinton voters.

  • To qote a DKos front pager: " She's going to read a good speech, written by professionals, off of a teleprompter, and she'll do so with a smile. She's going to appear distressingly normal. And as such, she's going to, at least in some small measure, succeed -- at least for tonight.... The truth about Palin isn't going anywhere."

The point is, Ms. Palin's speech is merely a performance. An actor reading a script. It's just a show and the media know that. What will matter is how she thinks on her feet... speaks on the stump... and what the zeitgeist will think of her.

By all accounts Obama hit it out of the park with his speech at the DNC. Do you think that will affect how the media will cover him, say, tomorrow?

  • I think she'll do fine at her speech.

I'm waiting for the media availability/interview/townhall.

And, nobody's really going to be talking about Obama, the same way they didn't really ttalk about McCain at the Dem convention.

  • No. I shouldn't have said "tomorrow." My point was Obama's speech may have tinged media coverage of him for a day, but after that the news cycle moves on. I think the same will be true for Ms. Palin. She'll get positive coverage as long as she doesn't swear, tremble or freeze, or call Obama the anti-Christ. The bar is that low.

But I don't think her speech will change the long term media coverage.

  • I gotta say, I'm not impressed as of this point.

    She seems small somehow.

But again, I'm biased. I think what the heads say will be extremely important.

  • I think that if she's on the covers of tabloid newspapers today, one week (!) after being introduced to the country, she'll be there for as long as she's a public figure.

    She's now the Republicans' Britney.

    +++++

  • Maybe. There's certainly the possibility that she stays there through the election. It depends on how those covers sell.
