Stray thought

Sarah Palin's Yahoo email account was hacked. Thus far, from what I've seen, there's nothing too inflammatory, but it does lead to two questions. 1) Why is a governor conducting state business on Yahoo email.

2) How did they hack it? Did they crack it at Yahoo or did they spoof her into giving up information (which would be a far bigger deal politically.)

The McCain campaign is outraged. (Outraged, I say!)

  • People aren't too smart with e-mail. It could be interesting to see what they've got. But you're right, nothing too crazy yet.

  • I can't wait until Sarah's mom-knobs are shaking with rage.

But for whatever foul thing dwells in the sack on the left side of John McCain's face, I can wait, I can wait a very long time for that thing to chew its way out.

  • Again, thus far it's nothing. And, frankly, this is the equivalent of breaking into a candidate's car.

But, let me say this. My hunch is they cracked it on the Yahoo side, but if they did spoof her, it would be politically pretty damaging.

Imagine the jokes about her being fooled into giving away X. Imagine the jokes about Nigerian princes.

  • Palin used yahoo so that her emails could not be subpoenaed in any investigation. It's not very smart because yahoo isn't secure (ssh), while the state email system is.

As for the "how', I can think of three ways off the top of my head:
Palin didn't log in with https and a packet sniffer grabbed her password, somebody at yahoo gave them the password, or the log in was intercepted on wi-fi (WEP is easy to crack).

  • A bit beyond my knowledge,

From what I've seen, there's not really anything in the emails, so other than spotlighting the ethics and security issues of the practice, kind of an empty event, you know.

(I guess it does add a little more stink to Troopergate.)
