Colin Powell gossip

Tom DeFrank has a pretty good inside look at Colin Powell's appearance on MTP this Sunday. (You knew Powell was going to "soft leak" his message to somebody. That's how Powell works.)

Short version: Powell will not likely outright endorse Obama, but he will make his intentions clear. McCain hasn't called Powell in months.

One of Powell's objections is that McCain has surrounded himself with neocons.

(My thought: More than an endorsement, Powell's greatest impact, if he chooses to go there, would be to take on the Ayers/anti-American/terrorist stuff. He's one of the few figures with enough heft to successfully call bullshit on all that.)

  • I think that, in the big picture, Powell is damaged goods: duped by the neocons and then recanting.

The Right sees him as a traitor, or at best, a fair-weather friend. The Left sees him as the man who sealed the deal on Iraq for Bush and gave the media licence to go jingoistic.
Thus he has respect, but insubstantial credibility.

If he takes on McCain's foreign policy, however, it would hit him where it would hurt most. The less he says about Obama, the better.

  • I agree with you sort of. Out here in the world, that's true, but in the insiders world, he's still seen as significant. He affects the CW setters, the media, and alot of the "serious" people in Washington.

I'm not suggesting he will swing even a single vote, but I think he will affect the coverage because he'll be affecting that top level group of Woodward, Broder type insiders.

Agreed, foreign policy would be substantial, but I really think, if he wanted to wade in, he could take the role of referee on the "anti-American" crap.
