McCain is talking about substantially cutting Medicare

Beneath all the nasty noise,
John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs.....

The McCain campaign hasn't given a specific figure for the cuts, but didn't dispute the analysts' estimate.

  • 'xactly.

Florida, obviously, but also the older, poorer states in the rustbelt, Pa, OH, etc.

  • Seniors are the only age demo breaking for McCain, and he says he's going to take away Medicare? But he'll replace it with a $5k tax credit to buy private insurance, which won't cover "pre-existing conditions". In other words, only healthy seniors will be able to buy McCain's health insurance.

The nation just took a giant step into Bob Dole territory here.

  • Todd, The question would be, can you get that message out through the last month noise?

I would think you mention this in public a few times, but generally use it targeting particular states and local markets with a very straight ad.. Fla, Pa, Oh, etc.

  • The other development yesterday was McCain's health care adviser saying that access to an emergency room is the same as having health insurance.

These two things (Medicare and emergency room) will take a few days to filter through the media, but they will get through the noise.

The media is no longer acting as a sentry and keeping negative news about McCain from reaching a wider audience than the blogosphere.

  • Todd, one of his people said that about a month ago, too. It never really registered then.

And, that's a really good point. Alot of the reporters are now inserting little lines down in their articles that cast McCain in a bad light. You see those little sentences saying this or that wasn't true, that little comment on the crowd, the mention of the weaknesses in the campaign.

I guess they're tired of being chewed on.
