Picture of the Day

"Well, the devil is offering a deal where I have to pursue starvation of the poor, increase racial strife, and start at least two wars to clinch this thing.....

Now... I'd rather work with you guys, but you gotta give me something. You gotta tell your boss it's time to bring it, Cardinal...."

  • I'll confess I was nonplussed at seeing McCain seated next to a religion guy at that dinner event.

  • Lew, there's always a chance at redemption, right?

    ....

r8r, Especially interesting as McCain was Catholic until it became politically difficult, and then entered some protestant church.

  • I think he's Episcopalian. They're just off Broadway Catholics anywho.

  • I have to image that for MUCH of the Palin/(mccain) base, seeing John schmoozing with a Roman Catholic cardinal is not a good thing. To the fundie right, the Roman Catholic church is held in regard somewhere above radical Islam and below Conservative Judaism.

  • My experience is that pretty much anyone lower than mainstream Protestant dogma regards Catholics as unsaved, Mary worshiping, Roman dictator adhering pagans. And that's the ecumenical churches.

  • Matt, I didn't think he was now. I thought he'd abandoned his previous sect and started attending a Baptist. I thought I remembered it as a big deal over whether he'd been rebaptised.

    ....

EPM, I'm not gonna venture down the "who hates Catholics how much" road.

    I just don't know.

  • Well, I'm not trying to go down a road... any more than racism is a "road." I think it's fairly well know that this brand of Protestant-Fundamentalist-Nationalism that the Palin wing espouses sees the Roman Catholic church as "the other." For whatever it's worth, this image of McCain chatting it up with Cardinal Egan is not helpful to him, vis-à-vis the fundie base.
