Bit

I'm kinda having an off day, but here's another interesting little bit where Josh Marshall theorizes that SecDef Gates' staying on has to do with his ties to Scowcroft, Powell, and the realists. (trying to undo the neocons? Trying to reestablish themselves as the center?)

I don't know, but it got me thinking.

  • Reasons to not immediately replace Gates as SecDef:

    a) The reasons you site.
    c) it shows Obama as a non-ideologue.
    d) it demonstrates stability in the US in the world at large.
    e) It demonstrates stability in the Obama administration to the general, Pentagon establishment.

I'm sure there are others. The main point here is to demonstrate continuity and order while we remain engaged in two hot wars in the Middle East. I'd hope to see Gates replaced by the end of 2009.

  • Plus, you know, he's really quite competent. He's worked well with the Army Brass and the Pentagon.

The main thing is, as long as he's willing to play ball....

You've got issues like Guantanamo and special ops around the world.

As long as he takes orders and sees eye to eye, I don't have a real problem with it.

  • 'It demonstrates stability.'
    Try continuity.
