Ethiopia is pulling out of Somalia, and they're pulling out quickly.
The UN and AU have token forces there, but not enough to do more than protect themselves. I wouldn't be surprised to see the government of Somalia fleeing the country.
What do you do?
Ethiopia announced Friday that it will withdraw its forces from Somalia by the end of the year, leaving this country's weak and fractured government to face an increasingly powerful Islamic insurgency.
The UN and AU have token forces there, but not enough to do more than protect themselves. I wouldn't be surprised to see the government of Somalia fleeing the country.

You know, I see two questions in Somalia. The "safe haven" question is definitely active, but you also have the humanitarian/warlord/failed state issues.
Personally, I doubt Somalia "breeds" significant terrorists, even in its Islamic movement that, to me, seems far more locally focused.
If there is a terrorist issue there, it's probably more an issue of safe haven/piracy/smuggling/money laundering kinda problem. It's probably more what takes place in the empty space.

Well say what you like about Islamic governments...they can do law and order. And they are much easier to deal with if they get respect.

I realized after I wrote the comment that I was responding more to the terror potential than your direct comment about Islamic government.
My fear in Somalia is that it would go more warlord than centralized Islamic government. They'd probably hold the capitol, but I have a feeling their power would be more factional and harder to deal with than a centralized Islamic state.
Just my hunch.

That has traditionally been the way in places like Somalia. Warlords, strongmen, everything is tribal and clan based. I think given the chance they could come up with some kind of national government. But it probably won't resemble Western democracy. I don't see why it should.
