Rahm is in

I'm quite happy at the news that Rahm Emanuel has signed on as Chief of Staff. He's young, smart, incredibly hard working, willing to play hard ball, and knows his way around Washington.

Correction
: NBC says Emanuel's office deny he's accepted.

(Also: Apparently, John Kerry is openly lobbying for Sec State.
I could be wrong, but I don't think that's how this crew works.)

  • Here's the key:
"... willing to play hard ball..."

He doesn't have to be an a-hole, but the Dems seem to be the party of white-gloved badminton when they need to be a lot more pick-up b-ball. And Rahm will be just as helpful in getting the dem leadership in line from time to time too I'm hoping.

I wonder if we'll see some deck chairs change in Democratic leadership positions in Congress?

  • Definitely, as I said a week ago when his name first came up, Emanuel definitely practices the "new Chicago way."

As for Congressional leadership, I don't know. Both Pelosi and Reid helped Obama along as much as they could in the primaries, so I don't see a challenge coming from that direction.

I think Steny Hoyer might face a little pressure. He works decently well with Pelosi, but they've never been tight. Emanuel would have been the likely challenger to Hoyer though, so, who knows?

PS. Clinton as Majority Leader is pretty dead, eh? Remember when that thing was flying around?
