Waxman ousts Dingell

This is a big deal that will affect all kinds of things, but, more tellingly, it marks an issues and generational shift in the House.

The vote was 137-122, upending Dingell's seniority. Waxman did significantly better among the younger members of Congress.

Another significant consolidation of power for Nancy Pelosi.

  • Just as with the Lieberman situation, I see the hand of the Obama administration as they slowly, calculatedly maneuver the ship onto a new course.

I keep reminding myself that Obama has always said that change will neither be easy nor quick. The import thing to me is that it's rational and lasting.

  • My question on this would be how much Waxman is willing to compromise.

He's shown himself as fearless, and that's generally a good thing, and I broadly agree with his direction over Dingell's, but, I kinda worry that Henry might push way harder than anyone wants.

On the plus side, he's VERY close to Pelosi, and she's definitely complicit in the Obama/new democrat plan.

  • I'd rather have a Waxman whom I have to occasionally rein in, than a Dingell I'd have to continually prod, if you know what I'm saying. And really, with this congress and these Republicans, don't you really have to over-shoot just to land on target?

  • Again, broadly agreed. Just want to make sure his vigor is aimed at them, and not us.
