Does Cheney now get his wish? Does Israel now attack Iran?

With the Iran NIE release, the US is likely out of the attacking Iran business.

The Israelis, on the other hand, still present that an Iranian nuclear weapons program continues and represents "an existential threat."

By publicly stepping away, has the US effectively tossed the decision back to the Israelis?

Just a random thought.

  • Short answer yes. I'm starting to get the impression Israel isn't as important to the average American as it used to be.

  • Short answer: yes.

The Israeli military can do things that the lame-duck Bush Administration can't get the domestic support to do. Kind of like hiring thugs so your own hands don't get dirty.

I'm skeptical that Israel can handle Iran and Syria at the same time, however.

  • So, yes and yes. I put this up with the speculative "random thought" because I didn't know if I was out there, but I guess I wasn't.

And, this would fall in with the rumored Cheney "end run" plan B, to let the Israelis attack, and then get the US involved after Iranian reprisal.

  • You know... I never gave much credence to all that Fundi, end times, anti-christ, hoo haa. But now, in the person of George Bush I'm not so sure anymore...

  • It doesn't matter whether you believe it. What matters is whether they do.

I don't think Bush is pressing for "endtimes." His sense of personal importance in history seems to have been cowed by his actual experience in history.

  • I don't think the Pentagon is happy with hitting Iran either. And oil prices would go crazy.

  • Well, we know Gates is against it and Fallon is against it, and you have to figure the top Army brass are against it.

  • There's still a chance of some kind of 'accident' to trigger it.

  • Oh yeah. Again, that was the re[ported plan that Wurmser talked around the AEI while dropping Cheney's name. He got sent to spend more time with his children for that leak.

  • And what do you think of the very popular view by a leading Israeli analyst Obadiah Shoher? He argues (here, for example, www. samsonblinded.org/blog/america-arranges-a-peace-deal-with-iran.htm ) that the Bush Administration made a deal with Iran: nuclear program in exchange for curtailing the Iranian support for Iraqi terrorists. His story seems plausible, isn't it?
