Not getting the coverage it deserves,

The first outreach/negotiation between the Afghan government and representatives of the Taleban is about to take place.
A meeting is being planned in Dubai in the coming days involving 40 or so Afghans, representing both the insurgents and the government.

It is being organised by the son-in-law of one of the country's most notorious pro-Taleban warlords and has the support of Washington, our correspondent report.

  • I guess the problem is how to end on a winning note.

  • Yeah. Unlike Iraq, the US actually went into Afghanistan with the Taleban as the enemy. (In Iraq, it could at least be argued that the insurgency wasn't who we went to war against.)

Making a deal like this, although it's probably the right thing to do, will implicitly cede the war to the Taleban when, after seven years, they're still there and participating in government.

The reality is far more complex, but in a binary assessment.....
