Republicans hate Franken

In its new right tilt, Politico has an interesting piece on how much Republicans hate Al Franken.

This was one of my concerns with his candidacy, that his celebrity would make him a hate figure used both nationally and around the country for fundraising and association. Franken has alot to prove and overcome so that he's not a weight on the party.

On the other hand, he's a Senator for at least 6 years, so eat it.

  • For non-Minnesotans, it may be difficult to grasp the unprecedented negativity we experienced in this Senate campaign. Franken was portrayed as Satan Himself, and now it is somehow his fault that Republicans don't like him?

Having heard him speak, and having the opportunity to speak personally with him, I must say that he is quite capable of separating the "entertainer" and the "senator".

The bottom line is that anyone to the left of Tancredo is of the "far Left" in Republicans' eyes. Our other senator, Amy Klobuchar, who is more quiet and moderate, was equally vilified by the Republicans when she won in 2006. This is what they do. The GOP as a whole has basically said that unless you vote exactly as a Republican would, that they will oppose you to the bitter end and that is "proof" that you can't work across the Aisle.

We will need progressive voices to keep Obama honest, and we really need to stop worrying about Republican temper tantrums because they will come no matter what. It's pretty much the extent of their "strategy", in fact.

  • No, no, no. I'm looking at this from many states away. In a general sense, I don't really care who is Senator from Minnesota. I'm glad to see the Dem win here, but I don't really care who it is.

And, let me add that Franken seems more knowledgeable on the issues than most other Senators when they come in.

My fear is that he, and his past, will be the hate object in ads around the country. It has very little to do with Franken the Senator, and more to do with races in Texas.

And, yeah, I fully expect that he can go in and conduct himself well. Smart, smart, guy. The thing is, from where I sit and the impact on our races, his character has already been written.

Understand, not a knock on the guy or his supporters, frankly, I think he'll be a decebt Senator, I'm just fearing a little blowback having to deal with the characterizations down here.

(PS. Big credit for winning in the recount. It must feel good to have pitched in.)
