Daschle knew it was coming and hid it from the transition.

NOT a way to endear yourself to the new boss....
President Obama’s choice for health secretary, Tom Daschle, was aware as early as last June that he might have to pay back taxes for the use of a car and driver provided by a private equity firm, but did not inform the Obama transition team until weeks after Mr. Obama named him to the health secretary’s post, senior administration officials said Saturday.

(Notice this is being pushed out by "senior administration officials." I don't know if they will, but "we were fooled" would allow room to throw him overboard if they have to.)

  • Standing back and looking at all the recent tax snaffus I posit two thoughts: 1) the US tax system is too complicated to comply with...I know, I know, they were cutting it close, but..., 2) the IRS is not pursuing taxes due...why didn't these folks get dinged already?

  • #2 is very true. The Bush admin changed/gutted the enforcement arm. Far less audits, far less scrutiny.

I also find it interesting that for all the vetting the transition did, they appear weak in this area.
