It sounds like Gregg is in

It does look like Repub Senator Judd Gregg will be the next Commerce Secretary. This is particularly significant because of its potential effect on the balance of the Senate.
Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) has emerged as a top candidate to be Barack Obama's commerce secretary, and an announcement could be made as soon as Monday, a White House official said Saturday....

One Senate aide said Gregg “seems to want” the job.

  • It wouldn't surprise me if Gregg wanted the Cabinet spot. He is one of the "not conservative enough" Senators that the Republicans will almost certainly be trying to purge in the primaries. Taking the post seems to be a sensible thing to do, and he is thus spared from his Party's ill-considered strategies. He will probably get more done in the Cabinet than he would in the Senate.

I highly doubt this move will gain the Administration any points with the GOP, however.

  • Yeah, Gregg has alot of motivations. I'm not so sure they'd go after him in a primary, but with the climate the way it is, his general election looks like it could be close, and those Southern Republicans will be defining his party ID. Plus, he'll have next to no pull in the caucus.

So, instead, he takes probably the best nest feathering job out there and positions himself for a wealthy life after.

And, no, the GOP will not praise this as bipartisanship.
