Local note

There's a small burbling locally about some of Mexico's rich (or at least their families) moving to Houston to get away from Mexico's declining security.

Not a huge trend, but interesting in relation to the perceptions of the stability of Mexico.

  • Interestingly, I understand Mexican President Calderón is very conservative, yet Mexico seems to have really back-slid under his presidency. I may be drawing conclusion where I shouldn't, but it seems the United States is less secure when other countries in the Americas are led by conservative governments. Ironically, we've always worked to undermine liberal governments, thus ensuring we become less secure... all in the name of blind ideology.

    Just a stray thought...

  • Well, Mexico is a specific second world case of very rich and massive poverty. As a percentage their middle class is small.

Really, Mexico would be better off with more social programs. That's long been one of my arguments on immigration, that it's the crushing poverty and disruption of agriculture towards factory farms that has dislocated so many of MExico's poor. So they come here.

  • I think you are right about class distribution! Have you noticed Hillary's comments - she says we share the blame...I think she is working into the position that will call for more and better drug treatment in the US to cut the market for illegal drugs...and maybe even converting some to legal from drug companies. Whadda ya think?
