  • And so they're going to Mecca next? Right?

  • Ha!

    Made me cackle out loud.

  • That is funny... but could you imagine if an American president did go to Mecca? Not in a pandering way, but just as an acknowledgement of respect. I wonder what this might do to focus the attention of the actors in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict... and the broader Middle East. Maybe nothing, I dunno, but it's an interesting idea.

  • I get your point, but the perception on that might be bad as well.

I guess it depends on the president.

  • I believe Mecca is closed to non-Muslims.

And I wouldn't DREAM of taking the obvious anti-Obama cheapshot here.

  • Yeah, I wasn't really thinking about Obama. It was just the notion -- first expressed in jest -- seemed really compelling to me as a "what if".

I didn't know about the non-Muslim thing with Mecca.

  • TG, if it's not, the politics of a non-muslim American would be nearly impossible.

  • The Dome of the Rock is close by and open to non-muslims.
