Rush Limbaugh does run the Republican Party.

In the alpha dog theory of politics, the man forced to eat it and apologize is the submissive male.

So, when Michael Steele, THE HEAD OF THE GOP, backs down and issues a groveling apology to Rush Limbaugh, we have just been shown who is the alpha dog on the Republican side of the fence.

Alright media, this is the kind of story you live for. Mince away.

  • What the hell is going on? I don't have cable TV, nor do I listen to talk radio (well, some times I listen to Ed Schultz) so I really don't get the whole Limbaugh "mystique."

  • Limbaugh appeals to the lowest-common-denominator of old-timey boot-strap Americanism. It's a myth that hasn't died out completely. As long as there are small towns and people that have gotten wealthy by screwing people in small towns there will be Rush listeners.

  • EPM, Basically, Limbaugh made himself as a superior everyman of sorts among those who wanted to hate the Clintons.

    It's a frighteningly loyal audience.

    ....

Anon, It's not just small towns. It's just Red state towns.

There was a period at the end of the Clinton era where a couple restaurants would advertise that they played the show so "you could eat lunch and not miss a minute."

  • To what degree is Rush's "success" based on the fact that his parent company has near-exclusive ownership of radio stations in major markets? Rush is the fast food of talk radio, being fed to us by corporate power houses.

It's not about the phony "fairness doctrine" it's about ownership.

  • I don't think the parent company is keeping Limbaugh afloat. I think Limbaugh is the flagship program which helps them build those AM talk markets.
