Thought for the Day

Ed Rogers in a WaPo collection of insider responses to Specter,
Specter didn't want to be a Democrat. The party deteriorated to the point where there was no place for him.

  • How much do you think the Republican party will shrink? Will they end up as small as the Green party, Communist party, Socialist, etc., etc....?

  • No, no,no...

I'm one of those believers in the cyclical argument.

So long as there are only two parties, neither will permanently die. There invaiably has to ba a place for opposition even if they don't agree on what they're for.

And, given enough time, two parties will fairly inevitably flip positions.

So, no. The Republican party is around forever unless we see another viable opposition party come up, and I don't see that as likely in the near term because of the infrastructure required and the 9 decades of writing laws to protect the two main parties.

And, given time, they'll find some new cause or new messenger or something to crawl back. (But how long I don't know.)

It's like a boxing league with only two participants.
