Bush

Bush made a speech fundraising for his library last night,

On torture,
"The first thing you do is ask what's legal?" Bush said. "What do the lawyers say is possible? I made the decision, within the law, to get information so I can say to myself, 'I've done what it takes to do my duty to protect the American people.' I can tell you that the information we got saved lives."

On Obama,
"Nothing I am saying is meant to criticize my successor," Bush said. "There are plenty of people who have weighed in. Trust me, having seen it first-hand. I didn't like it when a former president criticized me, so therefore I am not going to criticize my successor. I wish him all the best."

And then he hinted "socialist,"
Asked what he thinks about conservative pundits who say the Obama administration's fiscal policies are opening the door to socialism, Bush said: "I think the verdict is out. I think people are waiting to see what all this means."

Finally, solace to the Iraq soldiers and people of New Orleans,
The former president received a noisy standing ovation when answering a question about what he wants his legacy to be.

"Well, I hope it is this: The man showed up with a set of principles, and he was unwilling to compromise his soul for the sake of popularity," he said.

  • He really is obsessed with himself. I get this feeling that he sees himself in Wagnarian operatic terms... Like a virtuous, paternalistic monarch put upon by the swarming demons -- foreign and domestic.

Boo-frickin-hoo. I'm so glad he bend his moral backbone when he trivialized the constitution, American traditional values and international law and goodwill.

  • Well, he was surrounded for 8 years by people who manipulated him by playing on his sense that he was great.

He was told again and again how he was historic as he followed their bad advice to the results we know.

  • And he continues to surround himself with sycophants and sycophantic audiences.

  • Yeah.

  • It's easy to pick on the guy.......so I will.

The first thing to ask is if it would work, then is it legal. Seems he too is trying to cover his ass on the back of the legal statement that it was not torture.

He doesn't have to say anything about Obama. Everyone from his Vice President to rabid talk show dummies are doing it for him. If he disagreed with the criticism he would say so.

He started the first TARP. He came to the American people and said that there would be a financial disaster if we didn't bailout the banks. I have no doubt that if he were still President he would have approved and pushed for the second round of $$$$.

Please, he sold his soul to the devil, aka Dick Cheney. He would have done a better job if he had listened to himself instead of Cheney, Rummy and others.

  • Well, the executor argument is that they only tortured because they had legal OK. The lawyers say they wrote the opinions but didn't issue orders. It's a scarily effective circle to escape torture culpability.

As for your last point, I don't think it's made enough. His defenders who say he is "smart" always cite his social abilities as part of his knowledge, but if you look at his decisions on who to listen to and who to trust, he was just awful.

  • Yes, the most important ability a leader must have is the ability to select good people to serve with him.
Unfortunately, we never know who those people will be because most of those selections are not made until after the election.
People voted for Bush knowing Cheney was his VP, people voted for Obama knowing Biden was his VP.
