25% of Aghan votes fraudulent

The EU election observers in Afghanistan say that approximately 1.5 million votes are "suspicious." That's out of a total of just more than 6 million votes.

  • More troops needed.

  • Well, trrops are needed to beat back the Taleban, but that won't win the war. The center of the war is now the legitimacy of the Afghan government, and we're about to sign up for four more years of this nothing Karzai who has no constituency of his own.

  • And there a row between the UN and the American diplomat, Peter Galbraith, on how to handle this. Oddly (?) it's the Americans that want a broader, more open accounting and the UN who want a back room, negotiated settlement.

The problem I have with the UN position is that it reinforces the effectiveness of fraud and corruption. It's like negotiating with cancer...

  • Yeah, I saw that, Didn't really feel I had enough background to blog it.

The issue at stake from our side is not so much who runs the government, but that it's seen as legitimate and capable.

  • Call it the Taliban if you like but I don't think US troops will ever defeat tribalism and Pashtun nationalism. Karzai is irrelevant.

  • I kinda use Taleban lazily to refer to the PAshtun/border/Pakistani guys.

But those guys also aren't all of Afghanistan. They're a regional group trying to retake control of the rest of the country.

Tribalism runs throughout Pakistan, but the group I'm calling Taleban are just one relatively small subset.

  • I think it's broader than that. Many muslims see what's happening as a War on Islam. Sending more US troops is actually creating more fanatics. But that’s probably not what you want to hear.

Obama knows this too but he's caught between the anti-war people and being called soft on terrorism.
