This is Pakistan

Between 2002 and 2008, while al-Qaida regrouped, only $500 million of the $6.6 billion in American aid actually made it to the Pakistani military, two army generals tell The Associated Press.

  • Off topic, but...

Is the UN conspiring to ensure a Karzai victory? First of all, the UN set up the election process. Then they removed Galbraith. Now they've issued logically bizarre recount rules that will ensure Karzai's 'victory' is maintained.

There seems to be a concerted UN effort to maintain the status quo in Afghan political power.

  • I think "conspiring" may be strong, but they're definitely not rocking the crooked boat.

(And Galbraith had had issues with his chain of command before the election comments. It was either the last straw or he was using that "noble" stance as justification for his exit.)

  • I think it's more a question of making it look like a democratic process. Can't see too many Afghans buying it.

  • The fact that Galbraith had issues with chain of command is related (in a way) to my point. Regardless, it looks like the UN has its thumb on the scale... Maybe not so much conspiring with Karzai's people, but the UN cocked-up the election process and now it's trying to cover up its failures.

  • Anon, do they expect it? Is the show for us or them?

    ....

EPM, maybe I was too strong, but I would agree they're looking the other way while Karzai steals it.

  • '... do they expect it? Is the show for us or them?'

Good point. I think the idea is to show some kind of positive progress to the folks at home. Apparently only 26% now support the war.

  • Maybe in Afghanistan, like so many second and third world countries, it's having the ability to fix an election that shows power/eligibility to lead?

Yeah, I know. It was just the first thought in my mind.
