A 59 seat minority

Supposedly, the Senate Dems are circulating talking points that they can't pass healthcare with just 59 seats.

So, the Senate Dems are now the 6'5" huge kid who gets still gets beaten up because he's such a wuss.

That's an election winning stance.

  • Months ago I said that meaningful health care reform wouldn't happen....

I've no doubt there are some good things in the Senate bill. But that's not the point. The point is that the bill is the product of a sausage factory that is so complex and labyrinthian that people just don't trust it... or the politicians who put it together. It's become a caricature of "bad legislation."

And there are only about 53 solid Democratic votes in the Senate anyway. If the Dems had real leadership, they'd put together a series of straightforward no-nonsense reforms -- each simple enough to Americans to get their heads around and each popular enough to make the Party of No look like the enemy of the middle class.

  • If we're claiming prescience, I thought healthcare was dead in March.

And, I'm not really a fan of the current Senate bill at all. All mandate and no support for anyone to buy.

Whatever they pass will not be the final say. There will be 10 years of amedments and changes stuick on budget bills, ag bills, etc.

However, that being said, the "bones" of the bill will remain the same. They won't be able to add a public option, for instance.

And it's frustrating for me. I'm a single fan with an opt out provision for those who want it. Once that was dead, and the public option was dead, we're really just talking about reforming portability, etc.

And, yes, we can make some incremental improvements, but we're still patching up a sinking ship.
